My favorite, Club 13 as it was once known.  Seeing this photograph brings to mind a few thoughts.  My first meal in Taiwan was in Club 13.  I had arrived from Clark AB on a Air America DC-6 I believe. I had flown a few times before, but the hot towels and candy before take off was impressive!  TSgt Rigdon, who was the Safety NCO at the 2165th Comm. Sq, picked me up at Sungshan in a extended cab blue Air Force pickup truck.  We came back to the Air Station along the open sewer ditch and I immediately encountered the many odors of Taipei.  It was a hot December weekday and I was tired, sweating and not feeling terribly good.  We unloaded my bags into the Comm. Sq building and headed for Club 13.  It was cool inside and I forget what we ate, but I do remember the funny taste of the bread.  I will always remember the flavor of the bread in Taiwan.  From that day forward, Club 13 was my hangout until I left the barracks and moved down town to the Chinese Hostel next door to the Navy Exchange.  I remember Club 13 had a 1 cent slot machine, the damn thing must have been manufactured in the 30’s.  Of course, all of the slot machines during my time were the old ones that ran with springs and wheels, and when you won, all of the coins fell into the troth at the same time, kaplunk….
