What a great place to concentrate on a chess match—Shihmen beach.. Update 16 Oct 2007: Thanks for posting those pictures. I was at Shihmen 1964. Chuck Adkins and I were there at the same time. I was 19 years old and it was one big party for almost 1 1/2 years. Those were the days! I am in the picture of the chess game on the beach. Cary Bergman on the left and me on the right. Here’s the photograph that has a number of points of information: 1. The most important piece of equipment in the hostel was the refrigerator. 2. Yes, you are seeing correctly, the lower door shelf contains 5 glass bottles of Foremost Brand homogenized milk. That’s how local “fresh” milk was distributed in Taiwan in the mid 1960’s and you had to use a bottle opener. 3. Schlitz and Miller were the predominate beer brands in this photo. 4. Note the Canada Dry, is that Quinine Water maybe and the 7up and Coca Cola. 5. We can guess the freezer compartment contained “ice” for the water. 6. And those large brown bottles in the rear shelf, your guess…..
