US Army Lt. Colonel Roy E. Rayle and his family settled into their Hsinchu quarters during the summer of 1957. Roy, a mechanical engineer in the Ordnance Corps was assigned to the MAAG group that advised the ROC Army in Chungli (Zhongli), a 30 mile drive north of Hsinchu. Roy was involved in training on Army weapons, vehicles and logistics. In 1958 he purchased a Nikon S3 35mm camera and began shooting pictures using Kodachrome and Ektachrome. His son Bruce has assembled Roy’s photographs, and those of others, to portray Hsinchu MAAG life and MAAG’s local legacy.
