PHOTO FROM JUJU WANG The Koumin Theater, constructed in 1933, appears in this 1936 photograph, left red circle. The camera is pointed west-southwest. Just out of the frame on the left is the East Gate. The other red circle was the late 1950’s location the Venus Bakery. Many MAAG personnel purchased American-style white sliced bread at the Venus Bakery. The bread was okay, but softer and floppier than what we were accustomed to. The bakery is still in operation today, offering wonderful goodies. Two to three blocks down the street to the right of the theater and bakery was the MAAG PX and Community Center compound. |

The magenta colored circle toward the left center of this map shows the location of the Koumin theater. The PX and Community Center Compound location is inside green circle. |

This photograph was taken at a USO show, probably in Taipei during 1957-1959 period. Roy and Dorothy attended, Dorothy thinks the gals are the DeCastro Sisters, but is not certain. Roy and Dorothy were not into pop music of the day. Bruce believes these are the DeCastro Sisters as they resemble them from other photographs of the group. Their big hit song was “Teach Me Tonight” in 1954. |

On a cold evening sometime around January 1959, MAAG children and few of their parents were loaded into the MAAG School Bus which had been rigged with curtains so no one could see where they were being taken. After a long drive with many turns, they ended up at a secret military base and were ushered into a show being presented for the ROC military soldiers. The night’s featured performer was Hollywood B cowboy movie star Sunset “Kit” Carson. Kit performed some expert trick shooting for the audience. |
