Hsinchu MAAG

Entertainment

Here’s one of the brave Cub Scout youngsters, Roy’s Son Brian,  holding up a photograph while Kit attempts to blow a hole right through it.   You remember basic training and the rifle range, wonder how Kit’s shooting encouraged the ROC soldiers in attendance that evening.

When it was Bruce’s turn to hold out the photo, the man standing next to the target shook Bruce’s arm to make it appear Bruce was nervous, that brought a good laugh from all.  Bruce is the tallest kid, standing on the side of the stage, holding onto a photo to be used when it’s his turn to walk up to target area.

How far we have come  -  try this today and you would be calling home from the cell block, changed with child endangerment of some sort. These MAAG children were standing anxiously awaiting their turns, with hope that Kit would keep firing until their turn arrived to step up to the target area.  What chatter must have taken place between the boys on the long bus ride back home that evening so long ago.

A short distance (1.2 miles) directly west  from the MAAG Housing Compound was the Officer’s Club, Hostel and Infirmary, all located in the Magenta circle above.  The MAAG Motor Pool was in the Green circled area just to the left of the Officer’s club.

A barbeque held outside at the Hsinchu Officer’s Club, circa 1958-1959.  A nice day to enjoy the outdoors.

Seen just walking out of the picture in her pink Cheongsam dress is Dorothy Rayle.  Not often did she have an opportunity to wear such a beautiful dress.  Look at this group, this picture could have been taken this afternoon.  They styles have not changed in 50 years.  I even recognize a bottle of Gordon’s Gin on the bar table.  Let’s take a break and sit down, enjoy life on this lazy afternoon in Hsinchu 50 years ago…..  Cheers...

You can see the smoke rising from the meat dripping onto the hot coals, there are jars of BBQ sauce ready to be sloshed onto the meat.  Where’s the cook?   These folks must have arrived early as you can see that there are many chairs missing from the tables.  Maybe the cook is inside the club bringing out more chairs.

The water in the background was connected to Beautiful Lake, which was east of this shot, presumably out of site in this photograph.  A recent map of Hsinchu refers to our Beautiful Lake as “Li Pond 麗池.

The 2nd Floor of the Officer’s Club was mostly all bar.  While the music, “Colonel Bogey’s March” the theme from the movie, The Bridge on the River Kwai played, these fellows marched into the bar whistling with the stomachs.

Bingo was played in the upstairs bar area, but children were restricted to the hall way, which was located behind the marchers.

The first floor of the Officer’s Club had a small restaurant with window views to the water.  No pictures available.
