The congregation of the Chutung church is at worship in their new facility in the 1950s. Note how the men and women sit on opposite sides of the church. This was the custom in Taiwan. I believe this custom was intended to better to keep one's concentration on the service. |

My mother's work was focused on women's and children's ministries. A major event every summer was the Vacation Bible School held in the back yard of our house. Several dozen beautiful children pose for a photograph after class one day in the 1950s outside our house. |

The Lutheran mission my parents were with in Taiwan was smaller than many other foreign missions and did not have their own Bible school and seminary. So the mission sent its young people with a call to the ministry to a Lutheran Bible school and seminary in Kaohsiung. Here three new ministers of our mission are shown on their graduation day in the summer of 1958. In the middle is Peng Ting- liang, who was from Chutung to the east of Hsinchu. In the early 1980s, he and his family immigrated to Vancouver, B.C., Canada where in 1984, he baptized my second child. |

The Catholic cathedral in Hsinchu is shown under construction in 1957. It was located on Chung Cheng Lu, the main street running west from the railway station. To the right of the cathedral is the convent. One block away on Chung Cheng Lu, towards the railway station, was the location of the Hsinchu MAAG PX, snack bar, bowling alley and theatre/chapel. This facility was in use from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s. |

Every summer in July, the foreign missionary community in Taiwan assembled for a retreat at Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan. The venue was the Japanese built Evergreen Hotel. The location offered a respite from the scorching heat of coastal Taiwan and a chance to mingle with friends in a relaxed setting. To this day, I can still hear the hymn "How Great Thou Art" resounding through the conference hall. On the final day of the Taiwan Missionary Fellowship retreat, a group photograph was always taken. This is the scene as the 1958 participants set up for the photo.
